Caricatures: Set 1

These were done on my own time to experiment with a different style. They are, respectively, a self-portrait, my aunt's lovably goofy Persian, and a toddler who was screaming in the grocery store.

Portrait - William

This is an assignment from Intermediate Painting in 2012 of my friends' son William. I did it as a Christmas gift and also to practice with portraits.

Environment Design - Futuristic Living Quarters

This was not an assignment but something I did independently to try and expand my capabilities. I'm in the process of writing a futuristic science fiction novel and decided to design the tight living space of one of the main characters. The top two are basic, showing what an empty unit looks like. The bottom is her unit with her personal touch.

The photo in the window is another drawing of mine, and the pattern on the panel under the bed came from here.

Britney Spears Political Cartoon

This was an assignment for Illustration I. Political cartoons aren't exactly my idea of a good time, but they're do-able. This was back in (I believe) 2006 or 2007 when Britney was the talk of the tabloids. I suppose it's more "entertainment" than "politics", but I'm not touching the latter with a ten-foot pole.

Watership Down Painting

For my Advanced Painting class (which finishes this semester) I wanted to take a more illustrative approach and try for some pieces that either blatantly or subtly hinted at works of fiction.

One of my favorite books is "Watership Down" by Richard Adams. I used a photo of the actual Downs for a loose reference for the background, and then added what could easily be the main character, Hazel, as the subject. I feel that the background is just real enough to get the point across, but also imagined enough to look like something for a children's book.

Story Board

My favorite assignment from Illustration II was the story board. I felt like I was born to do this and the instructor could tell.

We were given a list of (rather corny) jokes to choose from and then selected one to present in story board form. The one I chose was about a doctor who met with a heart transplant patient.

The doctor gave him a list of options that consisted of a young athlete, a middle-aged office employee, and a lawyer. The patient chose the lawyer's heart. The operation was a success and when the doctor asked why he'd chosen the lawyer, the patient answered that he wanted the heart that had been used the least.

Sci-Fi Anthology Cover

This was another Illustration II assignment that I really enjoyed. We took a reference image and from that created an illustration that could be the cover of a Science Fiction anthology. This was done with graphite, copied onto special paper, and then painted in using watercolors.
